Australia
Becomes a Party to Unesco Convention on Cultural Diversity
Australia has become a party to the United Nations Convention on the Protection
and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, Arts Minister Peter
Garrett announced. “The Convention is an international treaty that outlines
protective measures for cultural goods, services and activities and the
importance of access to a rich diversity of cultural expressions from around
the world. Importantly, it also aims to strengthen links between culture and
economic development,” Mr Garrett said. “The Convention is open to all United
Nations members that may wish to become a party and Australia is the 101st
member to do so. Under the provisions of the Convention, it will enter into
force for Australia three months after Australia officially became a party on 18
September 2009.
The Convention emphasises that culture plays an important role in fostering
international collaboration. It promotes tolerance and respect for all
cultures, and encourages countries to take measures that protect and promote
their culture, and allow and encourage a diversity of cultural expressions from
around the world. “Through a comprehensive range of funding programs and
policies spread across the full spectrum of cultural, arts and heritage
activities, the Australian Government is already taking strong action to
protect and encourage cultural diversity within Australia, and to promote
international cooperation through dialogue and cultural exchange,” Mr Garrett
said. “An International Fund for Cultural Diversity is administered under the Convention,
and parties can apply there for funding for projects and activities that
further the Convention’s aims”.

The
HarperCollins Varuna Awards for Manuscript Development
Closes 31 October 2009
The HarperCollins Varuna Awards for Manuscript Development has been a most
successful and productive program since 2000. The program provides five new or
emerging writers each year with the experience of working closely with a senior
in-house editor from HarperCollins Publishers on the development of a
manuscript. Writers and editors usually get to work together only after a book
has been accepted for publication, and usually there’s a time pressure –
publication date has been set, so there’s no time to think of possible new
directions, subtle extensions of character or idea! The manuscripts are
selected with a view to publication, but there is no guarantee of publication
by HarperCollins. Writer and editor will work together to bring the manuscript
to its best possible expression, and this process is intensely valuable in
itself – for both writer and editor.

Wakaid
Girl Lyndhurst Kid
12, 13 October 2009, 8pm-8.55pm
13 October 2009, 1pm (schools)
A unique story - a reconciliation story – an Australian story, which melds the
culture and traditions of the Torres Strait with life in the outback. Critics
and audiences succumbed to the honest and irresistible charms of Wakaid Girl
Lyndhurst Kid in its original season in 2005 and at the Dreaming Festival. Now
it’s back for 3 shows only during The Port Festival 2009.
Diat’s story is one of coming to terms with Black and White in her home, in the
town where she lives, in the wider world when she moves to the city, and in her
self. She is not one, or the other, she is both. Diat’s mother, Diat ‘Daisy’
Alferink nee Sagigi was born on Badu Island in the Torres Strait. She is an
island woman who ended up living in the middle of the Outback. Her battles with
racist attitudes, with alcohol and with white institutions are profoundly
moving as well as hilarious. Diat’s father is the talc stone sculptor and bush
philosopher known as ‘Talc Alf’. Back in Holland his parents had harboured Jews
fleeing from Nazi Germany. Talc Alf inherited their strong principles and
generosity of spirit. No matter how little he had for himself and his family,
there was always enough to help someone out. ‘Talc Alf’ is listed as one of the
100 Australian eccentrics you must meet. What is extraordinary about Diat’s
life and her writing is that what endures is not the bitterness, the anger, the
pain, it is the goodness of people who in spite of themselves, remain generous,
loving and proud. Cost: $15 & $10 (concession), $6 per person school
groups.
