THE NATIONAL ARTS AND DISABILITY STRATEGY SURVEY

WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

In October 2009, the Cultural Ministers Council of all nine state, territory and federal arts ministers, released the National Arts and Disability Strategy. The Strategy addresses the rights of people with a disability to have access to, and full participation in, arts and cultural activities in Australia. In 2010, Australia is developing its first national arts curriculum.

Now what? Now that the Strategy has been created it is vital that you share your views on the most important priorities for governments to strengthen, fund and support.

The National Arts and Disability Strategy have created the survey below for the purpose of collecting your response to priorities outlined in the document and so that you can let the government know what you want this Strategy to do for you.

Who Should Fill in the Survey?

- Artists

- People with a disability, mental health issue or who are deaf

- Art and cultural workers

- Art and cultural organisations

- Disability organisations

- Mental Health organisations

- Ageing organisations

- Employment services

- Community organisations

- Families and carers

If you can spend a little time (15 mins) filling out the survey Arts Access Australia and our state and territory members will be better able to support you and provide government with your ideas and comments.

COMMUNITY ARTS NETWORK OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA INC. (CAN SA)
Since 1980 CAN SA has worked towards a society in which artistic expression, cultural diversity and human rights are valued and supported.

CAN SA is the peak body for community arts and is the principal source of community cultural development, information, advice and support services in South Australia.

A not-for-profit, membership based organisation, CAN SA is governed by a Board of Management elected from the membership annually. The day to day management of the organisation is undertaken by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.
"Community cultural development (ccd)
is
fundamentaly about activism... ccd is
about shifting things for the better;
shifting prejudices; strenthening communities
and developing, through culture."
Gemma Pepper, artsworker, Artwork 61, 2005
A community based organisation, CAN SA builds long term partnerships with other community sectors such as local government, health, housing, youth, and disability, where the use of the arts is seen as an effective development tool.

Community Arts are created through collaborative processes. These processes ensure a sense of connection to and ownership of the artwork, be it dance, theatre, visual art, film or other. A skilled artsworker is the key facilitator in the process of community based arts practice.
Arts practice and creative expression are at the heart of a community's vitality. It is through the things we do together as groups and communities that we gain a sense of collective identity, a sense of place and belonging.
Community Cultural Development is an ongoing process in which a community creatively determines and expresses who it is, what it is and where it wants to go.
